A new ruse called Net Worth
(Luk 12:15 ) “And he said unto them Take heed and beware of covetousness: fora man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
Are you a Christian, Born again and spirit filled. I want to draw your attention to a new ruse in town called ‘Net worth’.
Have you ever met people that measure up themselves and other people based on this simple arithmetic equation:
Net asset — Net Liabilities = Net worth
This equation has set me thinking. I am of the opinion that Basic bible students will remember Proverbs 3:5: trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding…in all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your path.
I should make it clear that this is strictly for professing Christians…because if you aren’t, this makes no sense at all. The premise for this argument is actually for bible believing Christians.
Here are my deductions
1. The practice of Faith (a physical practice based on a spiritual instruction or revelation) negates this equation. You may agree with me that Christianity is a Godly culture that is entirely based on the realities of the Cross, where Jesus gave his life and bought ours. I believe our lives are now worth what we give for Jesus and not what we possess.
2. The variations in our personal value systems (which of course evolves with age) also negates this equation. It is very apparent that our quality of life (based on human benchmarks) gravitates towards our personal value system. Our value system in turn is usually a function of our exposures inwards or outwards. Any significant change in these influences tends to overwhelm our sense of self worth or Net worth. Here is what i mean; it takes a painful labour experience for some ladies to become real mothers. Many Wealthy but dying men usually make the best financial decisions.
3. The supremacy of value contrasts invalidates this equation: It amazes me every time God finds great wisdom in abject foolishness, enduring strength in pitiable weaknesses, true wealth in ‘widows’ mindedness’ and true leadership in daring servanthood. All these have left me with one objective: the greatest men that ever lived may never be known (maybe till we get to heaven!)
In my thinking, I concluded that quite frankly, anytime we evaluate ourselves based on our Marital status, Cars, Houses, Academic qualifications, Spiritual gifts, intellectual talents etc, we only go further to expose our folly and our vulnerability to that mean clutches of Vanity, a six lettered word (in English) that have left many wishing they were never born.
To keep my head from being swollen, I have decided to make this my daily confession: My life is worth much more than the multiple blessings I enjoy today. My true worth is in Christ Jesus.
